How to Measure for Tops and Wide-Leg Pants

Set aside a flexible tape measure, a flat surface and a shirt or pant you already like. Measure in inches and keep the tape level. You are comparing shapes, so use a similar type of garment where possible.

Measuring a top you own

Lay the top flat and smooth it gently without stretching. Measure from underarm to underarm. Double this flat width if the product chart lists bust or chest circumference. A chart marked width needs the flat number instead.

For length, measure from the high point of the shoulder beside the neck to the bottom hem. Shoulder width runs across the back between the shoulder seams. Sleeve length usually runs from the shoulder seam to the cuff. Dropped shoulders change the seam position, so read sleeve and shoulder measurements together.

Measuring pants you own

Button or close the waistband and lay the pants flat. Measure across the waistband and double the result for waist circumference. Do not stretch elastic unless a chart specifically calls for a stretched measurement.

Measure across the fullest part of the hip and double it for hip circumference. For outside length, run the tape from the top of the waistband down the outer side to the hem. The inseam is a different measurement, running from the crotch seam to the hem. Do not substitute one for the other.

Taking body measurements

Measure your bust around the fullest point with the tape level at the back. Measure your natural waist where your torso creases when you bend to the side, then your hip around the fullest part. Keep the tape close without compressing. These are body measurements; garment dimensions should include the ease you want for movement.

Comparing the numbers

If a shirt you love measures 22 in flat across the chest, its chest circumference is about 44 in. Compare 44 in with a garment chart’s circumference, rather than the flat width of 22 in. This example explains the method; it is not a size recommendation.

For metric source measurements, 1 in equals 2.54 cm. Our product tables place inches first. Small differences of roughly 0.4–1.2 in may occur with manual measurements and fabric handling.

Choose the silhouette as well as the size

A roomy top and a fitted cardigan can have very different ease even with the same letter size. Consider the clothing you plan to wear underneath, the waistband height of your pants and whether you prefer the hem tucked or loose. If the chart leaves a question, send us the product name and the measurement that matters to you.
